This is a story like thousands of other stories.
No, it’s not a secret either. But first, let me be honest about this particular story.
It’s not about me. It’s about you, the reader. So I’ll keep this short.
I’ve not seen anyone else do this on Medium, so I hesitated at first. But why hesitate? Two things entered my mind, in this order.
- I’m a risk-taker. It’s what I do.
- Ok. I don’t remember what #2 was. Look, growing older is not all it’s cracked up to be, ya know? Anyway, moving forward…
I have gained 70+ followers over the past year since I began writing here on Medium. Some of you have thousands of followers, I know. So you’re thinking “big deal dude, 70 followers ain’t crap.” But, about a year ago, I had zero followers.
So my first comment is, “thank you, thank you”. Seriously. That so many otherwise busy people take their time to read my stories and then to comment and clap for them is an awesome feeling. I think anyone writing on Medium will admit this, especially if you’re new here.
You see, when I come on Medium and see that people have commented and or clapped for something I wrote, I’m absolutely filled with gratitude. And I try to do the same for so many others here who have connected with me and/or have commented or clapped for my writing.
But therein lies the problem. I may not initially read or notice this, or it may be a few days because of my being wrapped up in something (like trying to build my dang website). So I have not always thanked or recognized those who have taken their time to read what I wrote.
This is not good because I feel it’s my part to respond, and I have not done so always. I am serious about writing, and about my writing. I want to improve every day. I want to make a living writing. I’m not dreaming of getting rich quickly… or even getting rich. I’m 69 years old. I just want to tell stories, mine and others, and create an income along the way to go hand in hand with my SS.
Yep! That’s it! Simple. But I have learned in a lifetime of starting, building, and managing several small businesses that there are 2 important factors to success. Well, there are more, but there are these two for now:
- striving to be, and to perform, the best you possibly can to give others what they have come to expect from you.
- thanking those who have been along for the ride with you, who have encouraged you and helped you.
So I hope that all those who follow me will read this. It’s hard making sure I have thanked everyone for reading, commenting, or clapping for my work. THAT is my purpose for writing this. So just in the case I have missed you, not responded to your comments, or not thanked you for reading and clapping…
Thank you, sincerely! You folks make this good-looking, gracefully aging, and humorous writer of non-fiction “words and stuff”… a happy camper. From me to you… thank you!
So, in the immortal words of one of my most favorite writers of all time…
“So long! And thanks for all the fish!” Douglas Adams (from the 4th book of the ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ trilogy). For the uninitiated… This is the message left by the dolphins when they departed Earth just before it was demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass. And no, I’m not leaving. Just a thank you.
