The News!
Some read it.
Some say they read it.
Most don’t. Most would rather cover their heads with it to keep the rain (or snow) off them because, as I have heard, it makes your hair frizzy in the winter.
No matter though, the news is a daily trap for those like myself who are addicted to knowing what’s happening around me.
And it never rains here in Apache Junction AZ at the base of the Superstition Mountains. Plus, I like crossword puzzles. Why I am not sure. Probably words… another addiction.
So without further ado, here are a…
Ever get a traffic ticket and it cost you a week's pay?
Driving in Paradise Valley, AZ the other day, I was tooling along at the speed limit. Why? Because I know from experience that every road in that town is a speed trap. Allegedly this is because all the wealthy folk in their million dollar homes don’t like speeders.
Yet, I noticed something that before I had paid little attention to… the vehicles that were speeding. I was passed by a Lamborghini, several Lexus drivers, a Bentley sports convertible, and a couple of Mercedes.
The price tag for speeding…
Who’d a thunk it huh? Seems like a flawed business model to me.
If this model is correct and corporate salaries continue to climb yet businesses remain solvent and no harm is caused to the economy… that would debunk the model right? And a raise of $.50/hour over a 15 year period, no accounting for inflation of course, to a new threshold of $15/hr. for most workers in America, this will destroy the US economy? Alrighty then!
A Little Background
This week Republicans, business groups, all kinds of unthinking and uninformed people declared war on a minimum wage of $15/hour…
RIP Lawrence Ferlinghetti 3/24/1919 — 2/22/2021
There are few things I personally enjoy more than spending hours in old book stores. I have a small collection of old books, such as my 1860 “Everybody’s Lawyer” manual, and 1895 “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. I do have a similar fondness for antique stores as well. I enjoy “old stuff”.
City Lights is one book store and Lawrence Ferlinghetti is one author, one incredible human being, whom sadly I never had the opportunity to see or meet in person.
Born in Yonkers, NY, brought up by relatives in France, educated at the University…
With a nod and a tip of the hat to the storytelling king, Paul Harvey.
He passed away Feb. 28th, 2009, almost exactly 12 years ago. Growing up with Paul Harvey, I cherished listening to him on the radio. Those words always, always made me smile: “Now you have… the rest of the story.”
They still make me smile. I may borrow his old by-line. Like forever. It’s a classic and his show was one of my favorite shows. It’s a great way for me to personally acknowledge Mr. Paul Harvey. In fact, I can sense there’s another story here……
Let’s get one thing clear right now. If you have never read “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” you are missing one of the greatest stories ever told, EVER, not just here on earth, but anywhere in the Universe. In fact, all the way to the end of the universe. Mr. Adams (not me, him) even tells you this somewhere.
It is a story that grew into a trilogy and is possibly the only trilogy in the entire Universe that consists of 5 books. The idea for the book sprang forth as Douglas lay in a grassy field on the…
“Let’s put this in perspective”, I told my wife on Valentine's Day. I had been scheming to surprise her of course.
Let’s Slide into Today’s Headlines (w/a mix of facts that will be filed under “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” …again).
To begin, speaking of greased pigs, there’s this mostly useless group sleezing around Washington DC to whom Americans donate millions of tax dollars annually.
Why this is I am unsure. Congress has secretly passed so many laws allowing them to become backdoor millionaires it boggles the mind. Why we, the public, offer them salaries and benefits truly is mind-numbing.
But I digress… the headlines. There’s quite a mixed bag available. But no worries. All are (at times) humorous, sometimes…
We need to redefine the “frontline worker”.
I am going to relate a current and personal story here. Not really about me, but involving my wife which of course indirectly affects me. This is in part due to my being 10 years older, at 69, and she spends every day around hundreds, maybe a thousand or more, people every day.
Today there are schisms dividing our country, created by our leaders, our government, and the media. One such divide is between those who believe what they have been told about the pandemic and those who don’t. …
And All Those Pesky Unanswered Questions…
Question: Of the registered Covid deaths in your country, what percentage of these deaths are specifically Covid? Or, are they “Covid related”? There’s a difference.
The disease is real, yet I have witnessed over the past months the absolute refusal (or inability) of officials everywhere to provide a breakdown of these deaths. Why?
This has caused millions, myself included, to question just what the current daily numbers mean.
Breaking this down a bit, there have been media reports alleging exaggerations in reporting. Here in AZ., we have been told daily there are “x” number…
